I went through the same thing here in Lake Macquarie a few months back when I lodged a DA for a small studio out the back. Totally get your nerves about the timing, because mine dragged a bit longer than I expected. The council quoted 6–8 weeks, but in reality it was closer to three months, partly because they asked for extra details on shadow diagrams. From what I’ve learnt, every council moves at a slightly different pace, and it depends on how straightforward your plans are. If you want a clearer picture of the steps for DA approval NSW, I found this site called Meliora Projects really handy to wrap my head around the process. Might be worth a look while you’re waiting so you know what’s coming next.
