For Russell Westbrook, it seemed a foregone conclusion.
The Thunder star entered Wednesday’s regular-season finale against the Memphis Grizzlies needing 16 rebounds to become the first player to average a triple-double in multiple seasons. He had four rebounds at the end of the first quarter, then snagged seven in the second in just under nine minutes. He had five rebounds in the first 2:42 of the third quarter to reach his goal, and the crowd gave him a standing ovation.
He finished with just six points, but he had a career-high 20 rebounds and 19 assists in a 137-123 win. He finished the season with averages of 25.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 10.3 assists.
”I’m very, very thankful and blessed Tom Jackson Jersey , man, to go out and compete,” Westbrook said. ”Like I’ve said many, many times, I don’t take this game for granted. I don’t take going out on the floor and competing for granted. When God has got something planned, ain’t nobody who can stop it.”
After averaging a triple-double and setting a single-season NBA record with 42 triple-doubles last season, he added 25 more this season DaeSean Hamilton Jersey , and the Thunder won 20 of those games. He ranks fourth in NBA history with 104 career triple-doubles, three behind Jason Kidd.
”His numbers help them win,” Grizzlies coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. ”They’re not meaningless numbers. You get numbers on a bad team or in a blowout game or whatever it is, but he shows the consistency every single night, going out and performing at a high level. There’s very few guys, maybe a handful of guys that play with that level of intensity, with a burning fire Ndamukong Suh Jersey , to be the best player on the floor every single night. He’s one of those guys.”
Westbrook had season lows of two field goals made and nine shot attempts against the Grizzlies as he focused on other aspects of the game.
”Russ is going to play the game,” said Paul George, who scored 40 points Wednesday night. ”He’s one of the best to do it at that position. He was looking to get guys going early and saw how the game was unfolding. He stayed with it.”
Longtime teammate Nick Collison said Westbrook continues to amaze him.
”I’ve seen him lock in, and I want to really appreciate how good of a player he is and the production he’s had these last two years,” Collison said. ”It’s not just that. I’m not too much into the statistics. They’re amazing, but seeing him put the organization on his back and lead the organization through a tough time and the way that he’s able to show up every night and produce and compete and lead the team has been really fun to watch.”

The Miami Dolphins have claimed quarterback Bryce Petty a day after he was waived by the New York Jets.
With Miami's move Friday, Petty joins veterans Brock Osweiler and David Fales in the competition for the backup job behind Ryan Tannehill.
Petty spent three seasons with New York after being selected in the fourth round of the 2015 draft. He played in 10 games for the Jets Jordan Poyer Jersey , throwing for 1,353 yards and four touchdowns with 10 interceptions, and went 1-6 as a starter.
Tannehill has suffered two major left knee injuries in the past 18 months and missed all of last season, but he is expected to be ready for offseason drills.
The Dolphins didn't take a quarterback in the draft. The Jets selected USC quarterback Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall pick.
Miles Bridges JerseyThe league announced the suspension less than 24 hours after Wilson broke Aston-Reese’s jaw with a violent collision near the Washington bench in the second period of Washington’s 4-3 Game 3 victory over the Penguins.
Aston-Reese was stickhandling near the Capitals bench when Wilson drilled the rookie with his left shoulder. The force propelled Wilson up into the Washington bench while Aston-Reese lay on the ice for several moments before skating off. He was later diagnosed with a concussion and a broken jaw.
The NHL’s Department of Player Safety ruled Wilson made Aston-Reese’s head the initial point of contact during the collision Tracy Walker Jersey , pointing out that Wilson did not have to pivot to his left side to hit Aston-Reese.
The league said Aston-Reese made no sudden movement at the last second that made contact unavoidable. The league pointed out several ways Wilson could have finished the play legally only to instead launch himself at Aston-Reese.
”He extends up and into the hit unnecessarily,” the league said in a video.
While Wilson was not penalized during the game Graham Glasgow Jersey , the league’s Department of Player Safety called for a hearing on Wednesday.
This isn’t the first time this season Wilson has been disciplined by the league. He was forced to sit out two preseason games following a late hit on St. Louis Blues rookie Robert Thomas and was suspended for the first four games of the regular season for boarding Blues forward Sammy Blais shortly after his return.
The league pointed out Wilson’s status as a repeat offender as a factor in the length of the suspension it handed out.
Game 4 is scheduled for Thursday night in Pittsburgh.

The Latest on the sentencing of Ronald Gasser, convicted of manslaughter in the 2016 road rage shooting death of former NFL running back Joe McKnight (all times local):
10:25 a.m.
The man convicted of manslaughter in the 2016 road rage shooting death of former NFL running back Joe McKnight has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.
A judge handed down the sentence Thursday for 56-year-old Ronald Gasser.
Defense lawyers argued that Gasser fired in self-defense when McKnight walked up to his car following a 5-mile confrontation that began on a bridge spanning the Mississippi River in New Orleans and ended with gunfire in neighboring Jefferson Parish.
McKnight was a high school football hero at Louisiana’s John Curtis Christian School. He signed with the University of Southern California in 2006. In the NFL Logan Thomas Jersey , he played three seasons for the New York Jets and one with the Kansas City Chiefs.

She left the courtroom sobbing after angrily telling Gasser ”You didn’t have to do that.”
Gasser was convicted in January and awaits sentencing on a manslaughter charge.
He killed the 28-year-old McKnight in December 2016 in what police described as a road rage shooting.

The man convicted of manslaughter in the 2016 road-rage shooting death of former NFL running back Joe McKnight faces sentencing in Louisiana.
Fifty-six-year-old Ronald Gasser could get up to 40 years in prison when court convenes Thursday in suburban New Orleans.
Gasser was convicted Jan. 26.
Defense lawyers argued that Gasser fired in self-defense when McKnight walked up to his car following a 5-mile rolling confrontation that began on a bridge spanning the Mississippi River in New Orleans and ended with gunfire in neighboring Jefferson Parish.
McKnight was a high school football hero at Louisiana’s John Curtis Christian School. He signed with the University of Southern California in 2006. In the NFL, he played three seasons for the New York Jets and one with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Miles Bridges JerseyDuffy drove in Mallex Smith Emmanuel Sanders Jersey , who doubled with one out and moved to third base on a ground ball.
Diego Castillo (1-0) got his first major league win after pitching two innings of relief.
Ryan Tepera (3-2) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the Jays, who were swept in the three-game series and have lost five of six to the Rays this season. It was the 12th time the Blue Jays have scored one run or none this season.
Curtis Granderson had the first three of Toronto’s five hits, leadoff singles in the first, third and fifth innings and was the only runner to reach third base until Smith in the ninth.
With two outs in the Toronto ninth, Aldemys Diaz hit a line drive that was caught by left fielder Johnny Field near the top of the wall.
Toronto starter J.A. Happ, who was 3-0 in his five previous starts, gave up one hit and three walks in five innings.
Rays starter Wilmer Font gave up two hits in 3 1/3 innings.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Blue Jays: 3B Josh Donaldson (left calf tightness) will run the bases Thursday and if all goes well could join Triple-A Buffalo on Friday.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The race to the playoffs continues for two Western Conference rivals Wednesday night as the Anaheim Ducks host the Minnesota Wild.
Minnesota’s home win Monday night clinched their postseason spot. For Anaheim, the playoffs are not yet confirmed.
The Ducks (41-25-13) have gained two consecutive overtime wins to move into the top wild-card spot. They are two points ahead of Colorado with a game in hand and trail Los Angeles by one point for third place in the Pacific Division.
On Friday, Anaheim bested the Kings 2-1. On Sunday, the Ducks defeated the Avalanche 4-3. Ryan Miller earned the victory Sunday after he came in to begin the second period for starter John Gibson, who was shaken up late in the first period. The Ducks’ goaltending tandem made 28 saves.
Anaheim defenseman Cam Fowler also was hurt in the contest. He will be out two to six weeks, the team announced on Tuesday.
“(Gibson and Fowler) are both big parts of our hockey club,” Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf. “We dealt with a lot of injuries (at) the start of the season and throughout the year. The one thing we do have is experience with our young players. We’re going to look to some of them to step up and fill some of those minutes.”
Minnesota (44-25-10) finished March with points in seven of eight games. The Wild posted a 3-0 win over Edmonton on Monday night. Devan Dubnyk stopped 22 shots to gain the shutout. He is among the league leaders with five shutouts this season, three behind league leader Pekka Rinne of Nashville.
The win allowed Minnesota to secure their sixth consecutive playoff appearance.
Zach Parise had the first two Minnesota goals in the victory over the Oilers. The first came on a broken play that turned into a two-on-one. Parise kept the puck and fired it low past Cam Talbot.
“You want to get the early one Mike Glennon Jersey , get the lead, play with the lead … to get one early, get the crowd into it, get our team going, it was important to us,” Parise said.
The Wild will play out the season without stalwart defenseman Ryan Suter. He sustained a fractured fibula Saturday versus Dallas. Defenseman Jared Spurgeon is also injured, though coach Bruce Boudreau said Monday that he would be ready for the playoffs, according to media reports. Both are listed as day-to-day on injured reserve, as is defenseman Gustav Olofsson.
“When Suter’s out, I feel like maybe I have to step up Nyheim Hines Jersey , and same with (Matt Dumba),” Minnesota defenseman Jonas Brodin said. “We played pretty good (Monday). We played a lot against McDavid, that line, so I think we did a great job (to) shut the line down, but I think the whole D corps did a great job today.”
Added Parise: “Ryan’s a tough guy to replace, but they did a good job all over the ice, made smart plays and simple plays and did a good job, especially against their top line.”
Carson Soucy made his NHL debut on defense versus Edmonton after being called up from Iowa of the AHL on Sunday.
The Ducks are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. They fell behind 3-1 to the Avalanche but scored two goals in 96 seconds in the third period to tie the game. Ondrej Kase powered in the overtime winner with an assist from Getzlaf.
The Ducks are getting strong performance from their second line. Against Colorado, Andrew Cogliano had one goal and one assist, Ryan Kesler scored a goal and Jakob Silfverberg had two assists. Kesler also had two minor penalties. Anaheim is among the most penalized teams in the NHL. Minnesota is mid-pack in the NHL in power play percentage.
The two injuries marred the victory. Gibson Vernon Butler Jersey , who had a concussion earlier this season, was bowled over in a net-front collision. He finished the first period but did not return. The team said Tuesday that he is day-to-day. Reto Berra was recalled from San Diego of the American Hockey League to back up Miller if needed.
Fowler was hit hard into the boards late in the third period. He was not available for overtime.
“We’re going to have to probably move some (defensive) pairs around a little bit,” Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. “There will be some mix and match on the back end, more so than to say we’re going to put one guy in and he’s going to take Fowler’s spot. That’s not fair to the people vying for that position.
“The best thing we can do is put a game plan in place and mix and match our pairs. Play the right way and do a lot of things we’ve been doing for long stretches.”
Following Wednesday’s game, Minnesota stays on the road to end its regular season. The Wild play at Los Angeles on Thursday night and then move on to battle San Jose on Saturday evening.
The Ducks host Dallas at home Friday and travel to Arizona Saturday to wrap up their regular season.
Mohamed Bamba JerseyAs he stepped onto the podium, back among friendly faces and in the building where he has done some of his finest work, James seemed at ease, almost content. No signs of stress anywhere.
Moments later, his demeanor shifted.
A few reminders about his team’s urgent predicament against Golden State, questions about President Donald Trump and another review of Cleveland’s heartbreaking loss in Oakland swung his emotions.
”I know it feels like we’re down 2-0, and I don’t like the way I feel,” James said. ”I don’t like the mood that I’m in right now. There’s no, like, `OK, you’re down 2-0 and you feel better than when you’re down 2-0 before.’ When you’re down like this, in a deficit like this – versus a team like this – there’s no good feeling. So I don’t feel good about it.”
The Cavaliers may be in a dark place.
For the third time in the past four Finals, James and his teammates enter Game 3 against the Warriors in a win-or-make-summer-vacation-plans situation. After they wasted a 51-point effort by James – with a reversed official’s call, missed free throw by George Hill and bone-headed move from J.R. Smith – and let Game 1 slip away in overtime , and following Stephen Curry’s 3-point barrage in Game 2 , the Cavs are faced with the reality that their season, strange as it has been to this point, is in serious jeopardy.
However Andy Dalton Jersey , coach Tyronn Lue, who plans to give disappointing forward Rodney Hood playing time on Wednesday night, feels his team can change the complexion of this series.
”We’re very confident we can do that,” Lue said. ”The guys are engaged and locked in. Winning tomorrow is a step forward, but then going out with Game 4 also. We’re locked into doing that, and we know we can.
”We believe.”
It’s easy to understand Lue’s confidence. After what the Cavaliers have experienced this season, a 2-0 deficit in the Finals against a star-studded Warriors squad on the cusp of being stamped as a modern-day dynasty seems manageable.
Cleveland has endured injuries, trades, tragedy and drama for months. The Cavs, who climbed from a 2-0 hole to beat Boston in the conference finals, have major roster holes and unfixable flaws. There’s no denying their toughness.
”We’ve been very persistent and very resilient throughout this whole season, no matter what has been going on,” James said. ”We have an opportunity to come home and protect home, as Golden State has done. It’s a very tall task. A very tough challenge going against these guys, going against this team.”
Teams that have taken a 2-0 lead are 29-4 in the Finals, but the Warriors know better than to be overconfident. They’ve learned the hard way.
Golden State held a 3-1 lead in the 2016 Finals before the Cavs rallied to win three straight and dethrone the Dubs. And last year, the Warriors trailed by six with 3:09 left before storming back to win 118-113 in Game 3.
Cleveland has won eight straight playoff games at Quicken Loans Arena, which may be louder than ever with hometown fans still frothing from some calls that went against the Cavaliers in the Bay Area last week.
Just the sight of Warriors forward Draymond Green should be enough to push the decibel readings inside the building to unsafe levels.
”I don’t really think about being up 2-0 because the series could turn so fast Ethan Westbrooks Jersey ,” Warriors star Kevin Durant said. ”It’s a great position to be in. I don’t want to take that for granted; don’t get me wrong. But the job is not done, and you can’t relax or be comfortable when you’re still trying to win this thing. We know coming on the road is going to be tougher.”
The Warriors may have Andre Iguodala back for the first time in the series.
One of the team’s best defenders, Iguodala has missed six straight games with a left knee injury suffered in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals. Coach Steve Kerr said the 34-year-old has improved.
”He’s getting closer, and I’m hopeful that he can play,” Kerr said. ”If not tomorrow, then in Game 4.”
While Kerr looked forward, James was forced to take another glance back at Game 1.
On Sunday, uncut TV footage showed James uncomfortably sitting on Cleveland’s bench next to Smith, who inexplicably dribbled out the final seconds of regulation. James was shown asking Lue if the team had any timeouts and then reacting as if he had been punched in the stomach when he learned the Cavs could have stopped the clock.
”Damn cameras,” James joked when asked about the video. ”I finally got Game 1 out of my head. You’re taking me back, huh?”
James, who is averaging 40 points, 10.5 assists and 8.5 rebounds in two games, abstains from social media during the postseason. He was unaware the video went viral or that he’s being criticized for not inspiring his teammates.
”Me being criticized? I don’t believe that,” he said sarcastically. ”I don’t care at all. I mean, we’re in the NBA Finals. How much more picking up of teammates do you want me to do?”

This story has been corrected to show that the Cavaliers won three, not four, straight games to win the NBA Finals in 2016.

Standing in foul territory Vontaze Burfict Jersey , Steven Matz stared at the ball he had just mishandled and started to give it an angry kick, then changed his mind and instead just picked it up.
Matz and the New York Mets keep their cool Sunday, barely, overcoming three errors and escaping the NL East cellar after a one-day stay by beating the Miami Marlins 5-2.
The Mets, who endured their worst June ever, won for only the second time in the past 12 games to reach the season’s halfway point at 33-48.
”We’re all disappointed with where we’re at,” Matz said. ”We had higher expectations. We’re just going to keep pushing.”
Matz (4-5) did that in the series finale, when he pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed only an unearned run. It scored on his error, and he worked around misplays by two teammates – an encouraging sign from a pitcher still learning not to let setbacks snowball.
”You still see him get a little flustered out there,” manager Mickey Callaway said. ”But he regroups and makes the next pitch. Today he won the game for us because he did that, because they easily could have tacked on some runs there early. He held them right where he needed to hold them.”
New York’s bullpen leads the majors in losses but limited Miami to one hit in the final 3 2/3 innings. Jeurys Familia completed the four-hitter with a perfect ninth for his 15th save.
Asdrubal Cabrera hit his 14th homer off Dan Straily (3-4). Todd Frazier had two hits and scored three times, and Kevin Plawecki doubled home New York’s first run.
Straily allowed three runs in seven innings, matching his longest outing of the year. Cameron Maybin hit his first homer for the Marlins, but they slipped back into last place in the division.
”We just didn’t do a whole lot with Matz,” manager Don Mattingly said. ”That’s probably the best I’ve seen him.”
Matz loaded the bases with two out in the second by walking Straily, an .056 career hitter, but then struck out Starlin Castro to escape.
Matz also reached behind his legs to snare Lewis Brinson’s grounder and retire him in the fourth. But the left-hander failed to come up with Straily’s safety squeeze bunt with two out in the inning, allowing Miguel Rojas to score from third.
”If I had taken my time I would have had him Charles Leno Jersey , but I rushed it,” Matz said.
MISCUES
Callaway talked before the game about how the Mets needed to play better defense, but they didn’t. Second baseman Cabrera and third baseman Frazier misplayed grounders for errors.
Miami misplays in the eighth led to the Mets’ final two runs. Center fielder Brinson failed to catch Frazier’s drive after a long sprint, and the play was ruled an RBI double.
”He probably should have caught that,” Mattingly said. ”I know they gave him a hit there, but if you ask him he gets to that ball and catches that pretty much all the time.”
Frazier then came home on a wild pickoff throw by catcher J.T. Realmuto.
UNEXPECTED CONTRIBUTION
Matz was 2 for 26 this year before he hit a two-out single in the fourth for his first RBI of the season.
”I was in a slump,” he said, ”but I’m out of it now.”
NIMMO SLUMP
The Mets’ Brandon Nimmo, hit by a pitch on his right hand a week ago, went 0 for 5 and is in a 1-for-19 slump.
”I’m super late. My bat speed is not there,” he said. ”But my hand feels fine.”
TRAINER’S ROOM
Mets: INF Dominic Smith, who had a cortisone shot for his sore right wrist, pinch-hit in the eighth and flied out. … OF Jay Bruce (hip) is expected to begin taking batting practice in the next few days.
UP NEXT
Mets: After an off day, RHP Zack Wheeler (2-6, 4.47) is scheduled to start Tuesday at Toronto.
Marlins: LHP Wei-Yin Chen (2-5, 6.14) is scheduled to start Monday against Tampa Bay to begin a three-game series.

He raced to the other end of the court. When he returned to his team’s sideline, he threw a red towel, before being held back by teammates.
”I was beyond emotional. Beyond mad. Frustrated. Pretty much any synonym you can add,” Beal said. ”I told my team that we were going to win, regardless. Especially if we’ve got John still in the game, I love our chances.”
That would be John Wall, and Beal was exactly right. Wall took over down the stretch after his backcourt mate was done for the day, scoring or assisting on 10 of Washington’s last 14 points as the No. 8 seed Wizards came back to beat the No. 1 Raptors 106-98 Sunday night and even their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series at 2-all.
”When Brad went out,” Wall said, ”I knew I had to do whatever it took.”
Wall finished with 27 points and 14 assists and, at the other end of the court Kenny Golladay Jersey , guarded All-Star DeMar DeRozan, making sure the Wizards would not be pushed to the brink of elimination ahead of Game 5 at Toronto.
”He’s a big shot maker. A playmaker. It was what you want and what you expect,” Wizards coach Scott Brooks said. ”We needed him to step up. He stepped up big.”
This was a game the Raptors led by 14 points early in the second half. But as their offense bogged down, the Wizards clawed back.
It was 92-all when Beal – who led Washington with 31 points – drew his sixth foul on a play in which he and DeRozan collided while Toronto had the ball.
Asked whether the official told him why that call was made, Beal replied: ”He wasn’t explaining that one. There was no explaining to do.”
Wizards center Marcin Gortat’s view of the officiating: ”I truly believe that some of those calls are very soft. I’ve never seen so many soft calls in the playoffs.”
After Beal left, the Raptors immediately went up by two, but Wall pulled the Wizards even with a layup that drew a goaltending call, then put the hosts in front to stay by feeding Markieff Morris for a layup off the glass.
With Beal cheerleading, jumping and waving his arms, Wall just kept producing, showing no signs of fatigue despite playing all 24 minutes in the second half. This is a guy who missed about two months of the regular season because of surgery on his left knee.
While the closing seconds ticked away Jonathan Bullard Jersey , Wall held up two fingers on each hand: Yes, it’s 2-2 now, and the best-of-seven series has become best-of-three.
The Raptors were up 51-40 at halftime, and increased that advantage early in the third quarter. But the game was tied at 80 entering the fourth, and Toronto only scored 18 in the last period.
”We couldn’t get a stop,” DeRozan lamented. ”And we couldn’t get a bucket.”
He had 35 points, six assists and six rebounds, but he started 0 for 6 and wound up 10 for 29, acknowledging afterward: ”I took some bad shots.”
Noted Kyle Lowry, who scored 19 for Toronto: ”We didn’t completely stick with our offense.”
TIP-INS
Raptors: Now 0-4 all-time in Game 4 when up 2-1. … Starter OG Anunoby limped off late in the second quarter. He returned in the third quarter, but sat out all of the fourth. … Backup PG Fred VanVleet was out with an injured right shoulder.
Wizards: Won their eighth consecutive playoff home game. … Wall entered Game 4 averaging 26.7 points and 12.7 assists in the series. He could become only the third player in NBA history to put up 25 points and 10 assists per game in multiple postseasons Jeff Driskel Jersey , joining Oscar Robertson and Russell Westbrook.
TOO MANY TURNOVERS
Raptors coach Dwane Casey declared before tipoff: ”Taking care of the ball is our No. 1 priority.” And then his team went out and had 18 turnovers, only one fewer than in Game 3. ”You can’t explain them,” Casey said. ”They’re out of character.”
PORTER SHOWS UP
After languishing through an 0-for-4, one-point first half, Wizards SF Otto Porter Jr. scored eight in the first 3 1/2 minutes of the third quarter, including a pair of 3s. He finished with 12 points.
UP NEXT:
Game 5 is at Toronto on Wednesday night.

The New York Jets signed former Lions linebacker Brandon Copeland and re-signed defensive lineman Xavier Cooper on Monday.
Copeland missed last season after tearing a pectoral muscle during the preseason. He had 30 tackles and one forced fumble in 32 games the previous two seasons with the Lions.
The 26-year-old Copeland is expected to serve as a backup on defense and be a key part of the Jets' special teams unit.
"Too many different levels of excitement to put into words," Copeland told the Jets' website. "Coming off of injured reserve, having to sit every Sunday, Monday and Thursday and watching other people play, I'm first and foremost excited to get back to the game that I love."
He signed with Baltimore as an undrafted free agent out of Penn in 2013 and spent time later that season on Tennessee's practice squad. After signing with Orlando of the Arena Football League in 2015, Copeland impressed Detroit after participating in the NFL Veterans Combine. His grandfather Mark Sanchez Jersey , Roy Hilton, played for the Baltimore Colts against the Jets in the Super Bowl in 1969.
"He played defensive end against Joe Namath and all those guys," Copeland said. "I know he's going to be very proud of his grandson and now my job is to continue to make him proud."
Cooper was not tendered as a restricted free agent, but was brought back to serve as a rotational defensive lineman. He had 16 tackles and one sack in eight games, and his play increased when Muhammad Wilkerson was benched at the end of last season.
Cooper was a third-round pick by Cleveland out of Washington State in 2015. He has also spent time with San Francisco, and has 56 career tackles and three sacks.
JaVale McGee Jersey
