  According to Afghan authorities, a former Afghan MP and her bodyguard were shot and killed at her residence in Kabul.

  Former top official in the former Western-backed government of Afghanistan, Abdullah Abdullah, expressed his sadness for Ms. Nabizada's passing and expressed hope that those responsible would be held accountable.

  She was a "representative and servant of the people," according to him.

  After the US-led invasion of Afghanistan two decades ago, many women who had held high-profile professional positions fled the nation when the Taliban retook power.

  The Guardian newspaper has come under a suspected ransomware attack.

  It said there had been a "serious incident" affecting its IT systems in the last 24 hours, with disruption to "behind the scenes services".

  The company said it was continuing to publish globally to its website - one of the most visited news sites in the world - and was "confident" it could still print the physical paper.

  Staff have been told not to go into the office and to work from home.

  In a statement, the Guardian said: "Our technology teams have been working to deal with all aspects of this incident, with the vast majority of our staff able to work from home as we did during the pandemic.

  "We believe this to be a ransomware attack, but are continuing to consider all possibilities."

  Ransomware is malicious software used by hackers - and often sent via attachments in emails - to gain access to an organisation's or individual's computer systems.

  The criminals then find and encrypt important or sensitive files - and demand a ransom for them to be unlocked.

  A huge range of targets - from schools and hospitals to government agencies and media organisations - have fallen victim to ransomware, with research indicating hackers are paid in the majority of cases, especially in the UK.

  According to the Press Gazette, the Guardian is the ninth most-read news site in the world, with almost 390 million visits in November.

  In its own reporting of the incident, the Guardian said online publishing was "largely unaffected".

  It said Guardian Media Group chief executive Anna Bateson and editor-in-chief Katharine Viner had sent a message to the company's workforce.

  "Thank you to everyone working hard throughout this incident to keep us publishing," they said.

  "We will continue to keep our staff and anyone else affected informed.

  "With a few key exceptions, we would like everyone to work from home for the remainder of the week unless we notify you otherwise."

  Jake Moore, global cyber-security adviser at security software company ESET, said the Guardian being targeted was not a surprise.

  "News organisations have become a regular target for cyber-attacks this year, and these attacks often have even more damaging effects on the companies targeted," he said.

  "Ransomware can often bring all departments to a standstill, so it is fortunate that despite this attack the organisation will still see some key areas working as usual."

  Four people have died after a migrant boat got into difficulties crossing the English Channel on a freezing night.

  A fishing crew spotted the dinghy sinking in ice-cold waters between Kent and France just after 03:00 GMT.

  The skipper pulled his boat alongside and his crew hauled 31 people to safety in a dramatic rescue operation, the BBC has been told.

  Footage filmed from the boat showed some dressed only in T-shirts and thin lifejackets screaming for help.

   

  The video - shared by the owner of the fishing trawler, Ben Squire - showed crew members pulling people up out of the water and the boat with ropes.

  People can be heard panicking and shouting as water appears to fill the inflatable boat.

   

  In the night sky, helicopter lights shine down and airlift people away, as lifeboats arrive at the scene to continue rescuing people.

  A government spokesman said authorities were alerted at 03:05 GMT to a small boat in difficulty off the coast of Dungeness, 30 miles west of Dover.

  Mr Squire, who was not on the boat for the rescue, said the skipper Ray Strachan told him they saved 31 people.

  After hauling them to safety, the crew gave them hot showers, their own clothes and fed them to help warm them up.

  Mr Squire said the sea was quite cold and the conditions were "a little bit rough".

  Overnight on Tuesday, temperatures dropped to 1C, with it likely to have been colder out at sea. A yellow weather warning for ice was in place across Kent at the time.

  When his son was sent to fight in Ukraine, Sergei begged him not to go.

  "You've got relatives there. Just refuse," Sergei recalls telling Stas, who was already an army officer. "But he said he was going. He believed it was right. I told him that he was a zombie. And that, unfortunately, life would prove that."

  Sergei and Stas are not the real names of this father and son. We've changed them to protect their identities. Sergei has invited us to his home to tell us their story.

  "So off he went to Ukraine. Then I started getting messages from him asking what would happen if he refused to fight."

  Stas told his father about one particular battle.

  "He said the [Russian] soldiers had been given no cover; there was no intelligence gathering; no preparation. They'd been ordered to advance, but no one knew what lay ahead.

   

  "But refusing to fight was a difficult decision for him to take. I told him: 'Better to take it. This is not our war. It's not a war of liberation.' He said he would put his refusal in writing. He and several others who'd decided to refuse had their guns taken off them and were put under armed guard."

  Sergei made several trips to the front line to try to secure his son's release. He bombarded military officials, prosecutors and investigators with appeals for help.

  Eventually his efforts paid off. Stas was sent back to Russia. He revealed to his father what had happened to him in detention: how a "different group" of Russian soldiers had tried to force him to fight.
