Gudi Padwa is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar and it is the first day of the new year for the people living in Maharashtra and the Konkan region. It is also celebrated in some of the southern states of India. It is an auspicious day in the Northern part of India as well. It marks the beginning of Chaitra Navaratri which starts on this day and ends with the festival of Shree Ram Navami. Gudi Padwa consists of two words- ‘Gudi’, which means a flag of Lord Brahma, and ‘Padwa’ meaning the first day of the phase of the moon.
