Aid trucks enter Gaza but UN chief says people need

The Rafah crossing point between Egypt and Gaza has finally opened to allow in a trickle of aid for the first time in two weeks, after intense negotiations involving the US, Israel, Egypt and the UN.

The shipment of 20 trucks bringing medical supplies, however, offered very limited relief to Gaza’s 2.3 million population, under fire and with barely anything to eat or drink.

Under the US-brokered agreement, only 20 trucks are being allowed in on Saturday, deliveries from the Egyptian Red Crescent to the Palestinian Red Crescent organisation. Aid officials said they were not expecting a delivery on Sunday, with the next consignment due to be a UN convoy on Monday.

The Israeli government has demanded to see proof that the aid deliveries are not seized or diverted by Hamas, before authorising further deliveries. A UN official said on Saturday that “verification procedures are still under discussion”.

Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, said: “We have been clear: Hamas must not interfere with the provision of this life-saving assistance.” If that happened, he added, then “as a practical matter it will hinder the international community from being able to provide this aid”.

Aid agencies are also negotiating with Israel to allow fuel, essential for hospital generators and Gaza’s water desalination and pumping system, to be part of the humanitarian convoys.

The UN secretary general, António Guterres, told the peace summit in Cairo: “The people of Gaza need a commitment for much, much more – a continuous delivery of aid to Gaza at the scale that is needed.” He called for a humanitarian ceasefire to rescue Gaza from what he described as a “godawful nightmare”.

On Friday, Guterres visited the Rafah crossing where substantial quantities of humanitarian aid were waiting for the green light to cross into Gaza.

target="_blank">https://beterhbo.ning.com/profiles/blogs/si-hejo“There I saw a paradox – a humanitarian catastrophe playing out in real time,” he said. “On the one hand, I saw hundreds of trucks teeming with food and other essential supplies. On the other hand, we know that just across the border, there are 2 million people – without water, food, fuel, electricity and medicine. Children, mothers, the elderly, the sick. Full trucks on one side, empty stomachs on the other.”

The Egyptian president, Abdel Fatah el-Sisi, said the hastily arranged summit aimed to produce a roadmap for humanitarian relief and to revive hopes of Israeli-Palestinian peace.

The summit, in Cairo’s gleaming and grandiose new administrative centre, was attended mostly by Arab and Europe leaders. There was no Israeli delegation and no senior official from the Biden administration. The US was represented by its chargé d’affaires in Cairo, Beth Jones.

At the summit, the Palestinian Authority president, Mahmoud Abbas, reduced to a bystander in the Israel-Hamas conflict, said Palestinians were being forcibly displaced in both Gaza and the West Bank, where harassment from settlers with security force support is forcing increasing numbers of people off their ancestral land.

“We will never leave our land and we’ll stand tall on our land until the end,” Abbas declared.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, said on social media that the medical supplies being sent into Gaza “include trauma and chronic disease medicines, and basic essential medicines”.

He called for the protection of humanitarian teams in Gaza and “sustained humanitarian access”.

Twenty lorryloads of supplies is a tiny proportion of the humanitarian aid that used to cross the Rafah border before the current conflict erupted with a Hamas massacre of Israeli civilians on 7 October. The daily average used to be about 500 trucks a day, aid officials said.

Martin Griffiths, the UN’s head of humanitarian affairs and emergency relief, said: “I am confident that this delivery will be the start of a sustainable effort to provide essential supplies – including food, water, medicine and fuel – to the people of Gaza, in a safe, dependable, unconditional and unimpeded manner.

“Two weeks since the start of hostilities, the humanitarian situation in Gaza – already precarious – has reached catastrophic levels. It is critical that aid reaches people in need wherever they are across Gaza, and at the right scale.”

The planned convoys, under the current agreement with Israel, will not include fuel, which is critical for hospital generators and operating water pumps and desalination plants at a time when the water ration at UN shelters is down to one litre a person a day for all purposes, well below international standards for minimal consumption.

    https://ibusinessday.com/aid-trucks-enter-gaza-but-un-chief-says-people-need/

Egyptian and US officials first believed a week ago they had a deal with the Israeli government to open Rafah, but Israel insisted on guarantees that the aid consignments would be thoroughly checked to ensure they consisted only of food, water and medical supplies, and that arrangements would be in place inside Gaza for the aid to be distributed without Hamas involvement.

Joe Biden sealed the agreement during his visit to Tel Aviv on Wednesday but it took another three days for the crossing to open, while Egyptian workers repaired bomb damage to the crossing from the Sinai peninsula into Gaza.

Part of the agreement was for hundreds of Palestinian Americans inside Gaza to be able to leave, but there was no sign by Saturday afternoon that any had been able to cross.

“There is no higher priority than the safety of US citizens abroad, and US embassy Cairo teams are poised to assist these US citizens,” Blinken said.

“We are working tirelessly, including with partner and allied nations with citizens in Gaza, to secure their ability to safely depart the conflict area.”

The ActionAid communications and advocacy coordinator, Riham Jafari, said: “We welcome this morning’s aid convoy into Gaza, but it’s clear that what’s being delivered today is barely a drop in the ocean. Before this crisis began, around 500 aid trucks would normally cross the border every day providing a vital lifeline to millions of Gazans who were already facing a humanitarian crisis.

“Aid trucks also did not bring with them the fuel needed to power hospitals, keep ambulances moving, or to pump water from the ground. We’re hearing stories every day of communities coming together to donate whatever fuel they have remaining to keep incubators going for newborns who are in a critical condition. With 2.2 million Gazans facing a humanitarian crisis, we’re urgently calling for a ceasefire and for the opening of humanitarian corridors.”

Daytrips to embark on from Bodrum

While the Bodrum peninsula is certainly grand with a wide variety of regions and activities in its own right, sometimes it can be fun to escape the hustle and bustle of this booming holiday region and discover some of the nearby sites for a refreshing getaway and an entirely different experience.

Thus, I have prepared a number of varied day trip itineraries that are easily doable from Bodrum as a base.

Check out these five-day trip adventures to take from Bodrum:

    Bodrum to Datça
A 105-minute boat trip away from Bodrum’s center will take you to Datça, an extremely pleasant town and lesser-developed region that lies at the tip of the Datça peninsula. While Datça is also reachable by road, at a nearly 3.5-hour drive, for a day trip it makes much more sense to take the ferryboat across. Admittedly, the ferry boat fee is surprisingly costly, and even more so if you board with a car, TL 385 ($15) per person, TL 1,300 ($48) per car, it can be well worth it to discover the quaint town, spectacular beaches and stunning ancient ruins of Knidos. The ferryboat docks in Karaköy, which is less than 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the main port area of town with old Datça, an area of preserved stone houses, cobbled streets and boutique cafes and shops along the way.

The earliest ferry sets sail at 9 a.m. from Bodrum with the latest return being at 6 p.m., which allows for ample time to discover the region. While having a car will make getting around to all of the different destinations possible in Datça, the town’s minibus service also runs to everywhere you most likely would want to go, with the center of Datça being the base point for each different route. While the town is certainly cute and is set along the circumference of the seashore, swimming in any of the many “bükü(s),” from Ovabükü and Hayitbükü to Palamutbükü, will be your best bet for a beautiful and serene swimming experience coupled by a rustic and authentic seafood lunch. These special swimming spots, which are truly the essence of Datça, lie on the route to the ancient site of Knidos, which all told is an approximate hour's drive from town, making the two activities the perfect combo for a day trip getaway, especially as Knidos will be hot at this time of the year.

    To Bafa, Didim
At a distance of 80 kilometers from the center of Bodrum, Bafa Lake is a spectacular and ancient site with unique rock formations, flora and fauna that feels like a world away. With a history spanning back 8,000 years, Kapıkırı is the main town from which to explore the region, which is also an opportune spot for bouldering its otherworldly granite and gneiss boulders equipped with cave drawings. A truly special spot for photographers and birdwatchers alike, in addition to the ancient sites of Herakleia and Latmos, nearby is the Seven Monastery (Yediler Manastırı) all of which warrant a visit.

While there certainly is enough to see to while away the day in the Bafa and Mount Latmos region, adventurous souls may want to head out to Didim’s ancient Miletus ancient theater or head straight to the beach of Altinkum at Didim and then stop at the Temple of Apollon before heading the extra hour drive back to Bodrum.

    To Mazı, Akbük
A wonderful yet windy drive from Bodrum along the town’s southern coast will take you through Mumcular first and then on to Mazı and Çökertme and once you pass Ören, you end up in the beautiful bay of Akbük. If you time the trip on a Friday, then you can also visit the very traditional farmers markets that are held in Mumcular and Mazı. Not only will the produce most likely be less expensive but there are also a variety of different regional specialties and textiles that tend to be on offer. You will need a car for this excursion, but driving the coastal road is a trip in itself and offers the opportunity to stop in Mazı or Çökertme for a traditional fish lunch.

The final destination of Akbuk, which makes the entire distance nearly 90 kilometers from the center of Bodrum, also has a number of varied beach clubs with restaurants where you can lay out and enjoy this quiet and pristine cove.

    To Uyku Vadisi, Iassos
Located in the Gökçeler Canyon, Uyku Vadisi (Sleep Valley) has dozens of caves and waterfalls as well as cafes and restaurants set in what feels like the heart of a forest. A welcome respite from the sweltering summer heat in Bodrum, this precious slice of nature is less than 45 kilometers away from the town center. For a super special treat, tack on a visit to İncirliin Mağarası, the only show cave in the region that is just four kilometers away. From there, a 30-minute drive brings you to Iassos, aka Kıyıkışlacık, which is a small seaside town, with a handful of restaurants that houses the ancient site of Lassos, a Carian city that dates back 5,000 years. As part of the archaeological site, you can also visit the open-air Lassos Fish Bazaar Museum. The site offers spectacular views of the sunset and you can cap off the day with a seafood dinner at any of the nearby restaurants.

    To Greek Islands
Taking a day trip to a Greek island is surprisingly easy when based in Bodrum as well as in a number of other Turkish port towns such as Ayvalık, Çeşme, Marmaris and Fethiye. Bodrum, however, just so happens to have the most options of islands to visit and the quickest traveling time.

A boat from the town of Bodrum proper will get you to Kos in just 20 minutes with one of the express ferries that take off as early as 8:30 a.m. and have a return boat trip from Kos to Bodrum setting sail at 6 p.m. The Bodrum peninsula also has a second port in Turgutreis that has ferries servicing the Dodecanese islands of Kalymnos (a 45-minute journey) and Leros (a one-hour trip), making for a total of three different Greek isles that can be visited for the day. Keep in mind, however, that while ferries generally run between Bodrum and Kos year-round, the ferry services to Leros and Kalymnos will come to a halt toward the end of September. The cost of visiting Kos is also significantly less with tickets costing approximately 25 euros ($27) round trip, whereas boat trips to Kalymnos and Leros can be upwards of 75 euros both ways.

More malaria on horizon As temperatures rise mosquitoes migrate

From the tropical highlands of South America to the mountainous, populous regions of eastern Africa, the temperature range where malaria-carrying mosquitoes thrive is rising in elevation as the planet warms and mosquitoes migrate slowly upward.

Scientists now worry people living in areas once inhospitable to the insects, including the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and the mountains of eastern Ethiopia, could be newly exposed to the disease.

“As it gets warmer at higher altitudes with climate change and all of these other environmental changes, then mosquitoes can survive higher up the mountain,” said Manisha Kulkarni, a professor and researcher studying malaria in sub-Saharan Africa at the University of Ottawa.

Kulkarni led a study published in 2016 that found the habitat for malaria-carrying mosquitoes had expanded in the high-elevation Mount Kilimanjaro region by hundreds of square kilometers in just 10 years. Lower altitudes, in contrast, are becoming too hot for the bugs.

Similar occurrences have been found elsewhere. For example, researchers in 2015 also noticed native Hawaiian birds were squeezed out of lower-elevation habitats as mosquitoes carrying avian malaria slowly migrated upward into their territory. But given 96% of malaria deaths occurred in Africa in 2021, most research on the trend is found there.

The region Kulkarni studied, which is growing in population, is close to the border of Tanzania and Kenya. Together, the two countries accounted for 6% of global malaria deaths in 2021.

Global deaths from malaria declined by 29% between 2002 and 2021 as countries have taken more aggressive tactics in fighting the disease. However, the numbers remain high, especially in Africa, where children under 5 years old account for 80% of all malaria deaths. The latest world malaria report from the WHO recorded 247 million cases of malaria in 2021 – Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and Mozambique alone accounted for almost half of those cases.

“The link between climate change and expansion or change in mosquito distributions is real,” said Doug Norris, a specialist in mosquitoes at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, who was not involved in the research.

Despite this, uncertainty remains on the extent of how shifting mosquito populations will affect people in the future. A recent Georgetown University study investigating the movement of mosquitoes across all of sub-Saharan Africa also found the vectors have moved upward in elevation at a rate of 6.5 meters (roughly 21 feet) each year.

Mosquitoes are picky about their habitat, Norris added, and the various malaria-carrying species have different preferences in temperature, humidity and amount of rainfall. Add on the fact that people are fighting malaria with bed nets, insecticides and other tools and it becomes hard to pin any single trend to climate change, he said.

Jeremy Herren, who studies malaria at the Nairobi-based International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, said there is evidence that climate change is already impacting where mosquito populations choose to live. But, he said, it is still difficult to predict how malaria will spread.

For example, in Kenya, Herren said researchers have documented “massive shifts” in malaria in mosquitoes. A species that was once dominant is now almost impossible to find, he said. But those changes are probably not due to climate change, he said, adding that the rollout of insecticide-treated nets is one explanation for that shift.

In general, however, mosquitoes grow faster in warmer conditions, Norris said.

Rising temperatures are also not the only way a changing climate gives mosquitoes the upper hand. The bugs tend to thrive in the kind of extremes that are happening more frequently because of human-caused climate change.

Longer rainy seasons can create better habitats for mosquitoes, which breed in water. But conversely, while droughts can dry up those habitats, they also encourage people to store water in containers, creating perfect breeding sites. An outbreak of chikungunya, another mosquito-borne disease, between 2004 and 2005 was linked to drought in coastal Kenya for these reasons.

    https://vocus.cc/article/64e6538efd897800012e6180https://techplanet.today/post/more-malaria-on-horizon-as-temperatures-rise-mosquitoes-migrate

Researchers were also able to tie a reduction in malaria cases in the highlands of Ethiopia in the early 2000s to a decline in temperatures happening at the same time.

Weather patterns in the years prior had stalled the effects of global warming.

Pamela Martinez, a researcher at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, said her team’s findings on malaria trends in Ethiopia, which were published in 2021 in the journal Nature, lent more confidence to the idea that malaria and temperature – and, therefore, climate change- are linked.

“We see that when the temperature goes down, the overall trend of cases also goes down, even in the absence of intervention,” Martinez said. “That proves the case that temperature has an impact on transmission.”

The researchers also noticed mosquito populations creeping upward during warmer years.

Temperatures began to warm again in the mid-2000s, but public health officials also ramped up efforts to control malaria in the highlands region of Ethiopia around that time, which has led to a sustained decline in cases.

But even as the Ethiopian Ministry of Health drafted a plan to eliminate malaria by 2030, its authors laid out the threats to that goal: population shifts, a lack of funding, the invasion of a new mosquito species and climate change.

Cape Verde boat disaster vessel drifted for month after alarm raised says NGO

A Spanish NGO alerted authorities from four countries on 20 July about a boat carrying an estimated 130 asylum seekers that was found earlier this week with just 38 survivors and the bodies of seven dead people on board.

Relatives of those onboard said the large fishing vessel had left Fass Boye, a seaside town in Senegal on 10 July, and was heading for Spain’s Canary Islands. The boat was spotted on Monday about 150 nautical miles (277km) north of the Cape Verdean island of Sal.

“Our organisation … became aware of the departure of the boat on 20 July,” the Walking Borders NGO said in a statement.

    https://www.dancehalldatabase.com/forum/Dancehall-Reggae/Cape-Verde-boat-disaster-vessel/fe9de7041388eb8ed9ed759a00b3809c/45414

“The relatives of the people onboard informed us that they had left on 10 July and that 130 people were onboard. We activated our organisation’s search protocol, informing the authorities of the corresponding countries [Senegal, Mauritania, Morocco and Spain] in the rescue of the route between Senegal and the Canary Islands.”

The boat appears to have been left adrift for almost a month at the mercy of powerful trade winds in the Atlantic. The Atlantic migration route from west Africa to the Canary Islands, typically used to reach mainland Spain, is one of the world’s deadliest.

Helena Maleno Garzón, the founder of Walking Borders, wrote in a tweet about the boat on 23 July: “A Senegalese fishing vessel disappeared with more than 120 people on board. They left 14 days ago and the desperate families ask for a reinforcement of search means.”

Initial reports suggested the vessel had sunk, but authorities later clarified that it had been found adrift by the Spanish fishing boat Zillarri, which alerted Cape Verdean authorities.

Spain’s maritime rescue service confirmed that the Spanish fishing boat had rescued 38 people and recovered seven bodieson 14 August.

An official of the tropical tuna fishing company Pevasa, which operates the Zillarri, said the survivors were asking for help and were in a “bad state”.

Among the survivors were four children between the ages of 12 and 16, Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration, told the Guardian.

The NGO said it was “aware that search efforts have indeed been made” since it raised the alarm but that it considers “that they have not been sufficient”.

“The characteristics of this migratory route mean that these boats can easily get lost or drift away if there is an engine failure,” it added. “We have therefore asked for greater search resources that could have saved more lives.”

It is not yet clear how those onboard died, though some sources said hypothermia and dehydration may have been the causes. Sources said survivors ate the food supplies left by passengers who died during the journey.

“With more resources and more collaboration, these people would have been rescued and saved,” Maleno Garzón told the Guardian.

Most of those who died were born and raised in Fass Boye, and people in the small fishing community there have been in shock.

There is “sadness, consternation, despair and total calm”, Moda Samb, a local councillor, told Agence France-Presse.

Cheikh Awa Boye, president of the local fishing association, said survivors called home from Cape Verde after the rescue. Boye told media two of his nephews were among those missing. “They wanted to go to Spain,” he said.

According to some reports, only one in three boats carrying people from west Africa reach the Canaries. “Safe and regular pathways to migration are sorely lacking, which is what gives room to smugglers and traffickers to put people on these deadly journeys,” the IOM said.

According to the IOM, at least 324 people, excluding the victims from Tuesday’s incident, have died attempting to reach the Canary island from west Africa since the beginning of 2023. Walking Borders suggested the true number could be almost three times higher.

Di Giacomo said: “While the central Mediterranean migration route – from north Africa to Italy – is considered the deadliest one, this one from Senegal to the Canary Islands is just as deadly. The only difference is that we have little information because this route is poorly monitored. These are long journeys, subject to strong Atlantic winds and only a few of those who leave arrive at their destination. We just don’t know what happens to the missing. Surely there are large numbers of so-called ghost shipwrecks out there, incidents that we know nothing about.”It is not yet clear how those onboard died, though some sources said hypothermia and dehydration may have been the causes. Sources said survivors ate the food supplies left by passengers who died during the journey.

“With more resources and more collaboration, these people would have been rescued and saved,” Maleno Garzón told the Guardian.
