Body fat contains aromatase enzymes that are actively involved in converting hormones like testosterone and androgens into estrogen. Fat also helps regulate production of leptin, insulin, and other hormones that influence appetite and metabolism. For women, adequate essential fat levels are critical for regular menstrual cycles and fertility.
Maintaining a robust immune function
The white adipose tissue that makes up body fat releases important cytokines, proteins, and other molecules that regulate inflammatory processes and immune responses. Insufficient fat levels can impair immune function and wound healing. Healthy fat reserves support the activity of macrophages, lymphocytes and other immune cells to optimize immunity.
