What Are the Signs and Symptoms of HIV?

HIV can show up in a variety of ways. The signs and symptoms will differ from one person to the next. It varies according on the person and the stage of the sickness.

Below are the three stages of HIV, as well as some of the symptoms that patients may experience.

The first stage of HIV infection is acute infection.

Within two to four weeks of infection, almost two-thirds of HIV patients will have a flu-like illness. This is the body's natural response to an HIV infection.

The following symptoms are comparable to those of the flu:

    •  Fever
    • Chills
    • Rash
    • Night sweats
    • Muscle aches
    • Sore throat
    • Fatigue
    • Swollen lymph nodes
    • Mouth ulcers

These symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks. During the early stages of HIV infection, however, some people have no symptoms at all.

Don't assume you have HIV if you have any of these symptoms because they are similar to those caused by other illnesses. If you think you've been exposed to HIV, though, you should be tested.
