On January 5, 2021, a recognized domestic expert in the field of grounding and lightning protection, Shahzad Muhammad Khan is the TechnicalDirector will hold a webinar on the topic "Grounding and lightning protection. Methods of active influence on lightning. How effective and expedient are active lightning rods". This is the sixth webinar in the series "Grounding and Lightning Protection - Issues and Problems Arising in Design".
DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT
Is it possible to control the lightning strike point? To this question, any specialist, without hesitation, will give a positive answer. He will think when the question is clarified ''…for the purposes of practical Lightning Protection.'' Click here
Now we have to take into account the cost of generating control actions, their reliability, operating costs, and compatibility with the technological functions of the protected object.
The physics of control actions on lightning is clear. The lightning strike point is determined by the channel of the counter leader, which starts from the ground structure. To achieve effective protection against direct lightning strikes, it is necessary either to initiate the counter leader from the lightning rod as early as possible or to slow it down from the protected object. The required levels of control actions are also known. Unfortunately, they are realizable for research purposes but are not very suitable for mass practical lightning protection. That is why neither in Pakistan nor in the vast majority of technically developed countries, regulatory documents on lightning protection are guided by active lightning rods.
However, advertising of active lightning rods is carried out by all permitted and prohibited methods. Unfortunately, even the decision-making bodies of our country are involved in the advertising process. In this form, a commercial event becomes socially dangerous and needs to be resisted. This webinar is planned to give a detailed analysis of the mechanisms of control actions on lightning, to provide factual data on their real capabilities obtained in the course of field observations, laboratory studies, and theoretical considerations. It is also supposed to consider the consequences of the possible use of active lightning rods (including the most famous ESE Lightning Rods) at real industrial facilities.
In conclusion, the possibilities of combining active lightning rods with the domestic regulatory framework for lightning protection will be considered and the prospects for the planned developments will be assessed.
