I am thinking about signing up for chess lessons online but I am not very tech savvy. What kind of programs do I need to install? I have heard people talk about Skype and Zoom but also specific chess servers. I do not want to buy expensive software just to take lessons. Can someone explain how the technical side of remote coaching works usually?

You really do not need to worry about the tech side, it has become very streamlined. Most modern coaching uses simple tools like Teams for the call and a website like Lichess for the board. I found this cool resource https://chess-grandmaster.com/ and they explain it well. Basically, you share a screen or connect to a digital board where the coach can draw arrows and circles to highlight squares. It is very visual and helps you remember patterns. You usually get to keep the game file afterwards to review on your own computer. It is very convenient and you do not need to buy anything extra.
