We replaced the retaining wall and patio. When the construction was being done, we got a LOT of rain and it really tore the yard. 20 yards of screened black dirt was brought in. I fertilized and seeded but before I finished raking it out the thought of trying to keep the dogs out of this all Summer was too much so yesterday 8 pallets, 400 yards of sod was brought in. Some buddies helped and we gotter done in one day. I've got 5 rolls left to fix some spots, where some of the dirt is that can be raked out as the grass below is still alive.
I ran into a similar issue with leveling in one corner and ended up using a few extra base blocks just to get the pitch right for drainage. Once that was set, I moved my patio furniture in and everything sat level. No rocking chairs or tables anymore, which was a huge win. Also, the poly sand held great through a couple big rains, so that was a relief.
