Twitter Blue: What's going on between Elon Musk Times?

  • April 3, 2023 11:04 AM EDT

Do you remember that for a Twitter account to keep its blue tick or be verified, you have to pay a wool? April 1st was known as day zero for all those accounts to pay Elon Musk or flat out lose their verification , but what do you think? That did not happen at all and in this context the New York Times raised its voice.

He raised his voice and was left without a blue, gold check mark or any other element that makes it visible that it is a verified account —at least, until this Monday, April 3.

Rebellion against Twitter Blue: What's going on between Elon Musk and the New York Times?
Well yes: this renowned French newspaper rebelled against the new policies of Elon Musk and Twitter Blue .

In fact, media such as The Washington Post decided to follow it under the logic of: why pay for something that has always been free?

Before Elon Musk bought Twitter, it had already emerged that this platform was working on a paid subscription so that users could perform different functions — here you can read more about this preview .

And in the Musk era, Twitter Blue ended up becoming a fact and with some modifications , because in order for the accounts —both companies and expert wave users, journalists, public figures or politicians— to be able to maintain their blue tick, now it is necessary that users or accounts pay 8 dollars (about 144 pesos) to the platform.

In the case of companies, the payment is one thousand dollars. And well, Elon Musk got like the SAT and, theoretically, April would be the deadline to pay or... lose verification.

We tell you that it has not completely happened because the national and international media report that this cut has not been reflected on the platform, although it has not been the case of the New York Times , which appears without verification after announcing that it was not going to pay Musk .

    Musk's reaction
And since the New York Times isn't paying for Twitter Blue—and another gang is following suit—Musk gave it a half-scornful message that goes something like this:

“The real tragedy of the NYT is that its propaganda isn't even interesting. Also, his profile is the Twitter equivalent of diarrhea. It's unreadable. They would have a lot more real followers if they only published their biggest articles.”

The Times does not have the golden checkmark — which is the one that Twitter assigned to companies or organizations, under the Twitter for Business verification scheme — and it will remain so with everything and Musk's messages.

In fact, the newspaper announced that it will not pay its staff or collaborators for verification , unless it is extremely necessary.

(Though if you take a look at the accounts from the NYT sections, they still have the blue check mark, indicating that the platform is still struggling to disable verification or is in complete disrepair .)

Meanwhile, in the homes of LeBron James - who also said that he will not pay for Twitter Blue -, the account appears with the blue tick. The same goes for the Washington Post , which continues to hold the golden tick . This is how things are in the age of Elon Musk's Twitter. Would you pay?
