HO CHI MINH CITY Dennis Eckersley Jersey , Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The 17th Asian Games wrapped up in Incheon, South Korea, on Saturday, ending two weeks of competitions for Vietnam's 199 athletes, who won a total of 36 medals, including victories for the first time in several Olympic sports, according to state-run Vietnam News Agency.
This year, Vietnamese athletes brought home three more medals than it won four years ago in Guangzhou Asian Games.
Of the 36 medals, one was gold, bagged by female martial artist Duong Thuy Vi in Wushu's jianshu and qiangshu all-round.
However, they were unable to achieve their set goal of winning two to three gold medals at Incheon games.
There were seven fewer silvers than four years ago, but the Vietnamese increased its share of bronze medals from 15 to 25.
Besides medals from sports where the athletes have been historically strong, the Vietnamese won for the first time in a number of events. All the first-time medalists were from Olympic sports.
Talented gymnast Phan Thi Ha Thanh added more value to the medal collection by winning a silver in the women's beam competition and a bronze in the vault event.
Dinh Phuong Thanh and Dang Nam each won a bronze in the men's parallel bars and men's rings, respectively, to make these Asiad the most successful for Vietnam's gymnastics.
Swimming was another history-making sport. It opened a new chapter for the country with two bronze medals won by teenager Nguyen Thi Anh Vien. The 17-year-old girl from southern Can Tho province, who also made history at the August Youth Olympics Games with a gold, recorded her best personal time to finish third in both women's 400m individual medley and 200m backstroke pools.

Weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan left his mark by setting a new record of 134kg in the men's 56kg snatch category, but still missed out on a gold medal with a total lift of 294kg, 2kg away from the gold medallist.
In the last competing day of the Incheon Games on Friday, Nguyen Thanh Duy claimed a bronze medal in the karate event after beating Assadilov Darkhan of Kazakhstan 7-1 in the men's U-60kg third-place playoff.
Vietnam' s women football team entered the semi-final round, but the squad failed to clinch a bronze medal after losing to South Korea 3-0. However, it was the first time Vietnam ranked in this sport' s top four at the Asian Games.
BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese leaders have urged continued efforts to improve production safety supervision and guard against floods in areas battered by downpours.
President Xi Jinping asked both Party and government officials to raise awareness of production safety and regard major accident prevention as a top priority during a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
China will strive to enhance production safety technology, Xi said, promising a series of safety projects to be launched soon for coal mining, hazardous chemical substance management and road transportation.
The production safety management system will be improved, with clearer checklists for power and responsibility, stronger law enforcement and better implementation, he said.
Xi called for better emergency response and rescue, as well as improved supervision in development zones, industrial parks, ports and scenic spots.
During the current flood season, Party committees and governments at all levels should strengthen flood control efforts and earnestly protect people's life and property, Xi added.
Echoing Xi's remarks, Premier Li Keqiang said in a written instruction that there are still hazards and loopholes in the country's production safety management as exposed by major accidents in the first half of the year.
China should accelerate formulating and perfecting laws and standards in the field, Li said.
Li also stressed extreme weather forecasting and early warnings, as well as emergency response.
During a State Council meeting on Wednesday, Vice Premier Ma Kai asked officials to follow Xi's remarks on production safety during the remainder of the year.
Ma reiterated production safety in mining, tailing pond operation, hazardous substance management, construction site supervision, transportation and tourism.
State Councilor Guo Shengkun and Wang Yong also attended the meeting.
