LONDON, May 16 (Xinhua) -- A leading charity said in a major report Monday that 950,000 pensioners aged 75 and over in Britain are living in poverty.

Independent Age, set up 150 years ago to campaign for older people, said the over 75s are thousands of dollars a year worse off than both younger ""baby boomer"" pensioners and working age adults.

Meanwhile, the charity warns those aged 75 and over are also more likely to live in persistent poverty than younger pensioners.

The report examines the financial circumstances of older people who lived through the Second World War, sometimes called the ""Silent Generation."" It uses British government household income data to look at disparities between different groups of pensioners.

The report challenges recent stereotypes of ""wealthy pensioners"" and shows how inequality persists into retirement.

The report's key findings show the average income of older (75 and over) pensioners is 85 U.S. dollars a week less than younger pensioners and 161 U.S. dollars a week less than working age adults.

A spokesman for the charity said: ""While higher incomes from private pensions and earnings have helped drive a rise in pensioner incomes overall in the last 5 years, older pensioners have missed out on many of these increases. The incomes of older pensioners have remained static since 2010.""

Janet Morrison, the charity's CEO, said today: ""These findings show how misleading it is to treat all 11.8 million pensioners in this country as one group. It would be foolish to assume that inequality simply ceases to exist at retirement age, but that is exactly what some of the recent rhetoric around 'intergenerational unfairness' does. The Silent Generation of older pensioners, renters and single women have missed out on many of the gains of recent years.

""This is the 'Keep Calm and Carry On' generation that lived through the Second World War. The older people we spoke to as part of this research talked about 'keeping a brave face', 'cutting their cloth' and not wanting to ask for help. There is a real risk that this generation will be forgotten and left to suffer in silence.""

Dr Matt Barnes from the Department of Sociology at City University London, who worked on the report, said: ""There are huge variations in incomes of pensioners, with hundreds of thousands of older pensioners living below the poverty line.""

Independent Age has called on the government to help poorer pensioners with a targeted campaign to ensure they get the help they need.

BRUSSELS Women's Cameron Sutton Jersey , Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) has launched a mobile app called AirProbe to help the public track how much ozone, black carbon and other pollutants they are exposed to, according to an official statement issued on Thursday.

Partners from Belgium, Germany, Italy and Britain have developed this system to increase people’s awareness of their environment. More than 300 people in Antwerp, Kassel, Turin and London participated in the first tests.

The AirProbe app works together with a small battery-operated sensor box which connects to the phone via Bluetooth and can be easily carried by the users when they are out cycling or walking.

"Thanks to new technologies we are now firmly in the era of citizen science where everyone can create, collect and share data for the common good," European Commission Vice President and Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes said.

Another app named WideNoise which measures noise levels has already been used by more than 10,000 people and was at the centre of a study around Heathrow airport in London.

Data collected is available to all, citizens, authorities and scientists, so that they get a better picture of the environment.

Air pollution has been one of Europe's main political concerns since the late 1970s. Vehicles, industry, agriculture and homes are contributing to air pollution in Europe.

Despite falling emission levels and reduction of some air pollutant concentrations in recent decades, Europe's air pollution problem is far from solved.

Around 90 percent of city dwellers in the EU are exposed to one of the most damaging air pollutants at levels deemed harmful to health by the World Health Organization, according to a report published by European Environment Agency last year.

MOSCOW, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has sent a letter to United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, asking for his assistance to increase humanitarian aid to Syria.

"The Russian side continuously provides humanitarian and medical assistance, demines the liberated territories and solves many issues related to restoring a peaceful life," said Shoigu, according to a statement issued by the Russian Defense Ministry on Monday.

But in order to return hundreds of thousands of refugees to their homes as soon as possible, Syria needs consolidated efforts of the entire international community, he said in the letter.

Shoigu recalled that the Syrian government troops with the support of the Russian Air Force have liberated a significant part of Syria from terrorists, creating conditions for the restoration of a peaceful life.

However, according to him, not all Syrians are able to return to their homes quickly as terrorists have destroyed many settlements.

Thousands of houses, schools, medical institutions and other social infrastructure are in ruins, the statement said.

More than 1,000 tons of food and over 80 tons of medicine are acutely needed today, Shoigu said.

According to earlier reports on Monday, Russia will send 175 demining engineers to defuse mines in Syria's Deir al-Zour.

The first detachment of 40 deminers has already been deployed to Russia's Hmeimim air base in Syria.
