CVV and Dumps- How Are They Different?
In easy terms, CVV is a number that holds credit card information that is attainable from CVV shop. On the other hand, dumps are the raw data found on the black-colored strip in the back of your card which is termed as "mag strip".
Once hackers get their hands on the CVV, they skim the card to obtain useful stats. They do it with the help of a POS device or directly intrigue networks. Once you make an online transaction, you receive an SMS or an email with a dynamic CVV which expires immediately when you check out. Dynamic CVV is harder to hack because the two-factor authentication has taken the world by storm and has proved to be a great anti-theft measure.
In some cards, manufacturers fit mini electronic screens which tend to generate new dynamic CVV's every 30-60 minutes. Such CVVs are the future, and some credit card companies swear by it! It will give a tough time to hackers in extracting information and selling them as they won't have the complete information and will most likely not work.
The card verification code/value (CVV2 /CVC2 /CID) are optional elements of cardholder data that a merchant may capture and transmit as part of an authentication message. The purpose of the codes is to provide greater assurance that the purchaser has the card in their possession at the time of order, presumably reducing the fraud risk.
However, these code/values are part of the “sensitive authentication data” that PCI DSS prohibits storing after authorization; as a result, there are risks associated with the merchant collecting them that may (and often does) exceed the fraud risk associated with not collecting and submitting them as part of the authorization transaction.
For example, a business might accept phone based transactions, and for quality assurance, record all calls, including the card account information (PAN, expiry date), which they are allowed to do as long as the recordings are properly protected via strong encryption. If they ask for the card verification code/value, however, they have to make sure that there is no possibility of it being recorded.
Similarly, if the company accepts mail orders, the physical paper media containing the card verification code/value must be destroyed via shredding, burning or pulping immediately after authorization. If the company needs to keep a copy of the order form for some other reason, they then have to take steps to securely react the CVV2 /CVC2 /CID, e.g., by completely blacking out the code/value, photocopying the form, shredding/burning/pulping the original, and retaining only the copy in a PCI DSS compliant manner.
The growing use of VOIP, scanning technologies, digital fax technologies, etc. further complicate the situation, as they not only increase PCI DSS scope, but also provide more points of potential leakage or unintentional storage of the prohibited codes/values.
Plus, then the company's compliance costs are higher because they (and their assessors) have to test and validate that the codes/values are not being stored after authorization - an easy task when company policy prohibits collecting them; a complex and potentially costly process when there are data flows including them.
All of which makes collecting them a source of greater risk and cost for most companies, especially large companies, than the anti-fraud protection they are intended to provide. They can still be useful for small merchants, who only take a few card not present transactions, and always enter the payment information directly into their PTS compliant payment terminals, never storing any cardholder data at all.
And then there is the fact that criminals are able to steal both the card number (PAN)/expiry date and the card verification code/value easily with a skimmer and a well-placed pinhole camera. With the right access to the environment, they can get the PIN at the same time with an infrared camera as well.
