Here’s a closer look at each of these teams, their strengths, and what they need to work on to claim a spot in the Fall Classic.
Tampa Bay Rays The Rays had a strong season, finishing atop the AL East with a record of 97-59. They’re known for their dominant pitching, as their team ERA of 3.52 was the best in the league. Their bullpen is especially intimidating, with closer Andrew Kittredge boasting an impressive 1.55 ERA. The Rays’ hitting, however, has been inconsistent, as they’re 17th in the league in batting average. If they want to win the World Series, they’ll need to find some consistency at the plate.
Houston Astros Despite controversy surrounding their cheating scandal, the Astros have had a successful season, winning the AL West with a record of 95-60. Their lineup is one of the most dangerous in baseball, with stars like Jose Altuve, Yulieski Gurriel, and Alex Bregman. Their pitching has been solid, with Zack Greinke and Lance McCullers Jr. leading the rotation. The Astros’ weakness, though, is their bullpen, which has blown 23 saves this season. They’ll need to tighten up their relief pitching if they want to advance to the World Series.

Chicago White Sox The White Sox won the AL Central with a record of 91-68, thanks in large part to their strong offense. Their pitching, however, will need to step up in the playoffs, with Charlie Morton and Max Fried leading a young and inexperienced rotation.
