  The early prognosis for Darnold, according to ESPN’s David Newton, is a high-ankle sprain. If that is indeed the case for the 25-year-old, such an injury would typically take four to six weeks to heal.

  Darnold missed five games last year, in his first season with the Panthers, upon fracturing his right shoulder blade in a 24-6 loss to the New England Patriots. That caused the team to go out and sign Cam Newton—a prospect that was once again mentioned to head coach Matt Rhule following the Friday’s exhibition outing.

  This time, however, the Panthers seem firmly set on allowing Baker Mayfield to be their guy under center. Mayfield impressed in his second serving of preseason work, completing nine of his 15 throws for 89 yards and two touchdowns on the Bills’ second-team defense.

  Now, it’s just a matter of who will be backing Mayfield up—something Darnold may not be able to do in kicking off this all-important 2022 campaign.

  ESPN's Adam Schefter Has Injury Update For Sam Darnold

  During Friday night's preseason showdown between the Buffalo Bills and Carolina Panthers, backup quarterback Sam Darnold suffered an ankle injury.

  Darnold had to be carted off the field in the third quarter. The replay of his injury was hard to watch.

  Even though it looked as if Darnold suffered a devastating ankle injury, the latest update on his status is encouraging.

  ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Darnold is dealing with a high ankle sprain. He'll undergo an MRI this Saturday to determine the severity of the sprain.

  Usually, players miss around four to six weeks with a high ankle sprain.

  Panthers head coach Matt Rhule was unwilling to share a timetable for Darnold's return.

  "We'll have to wait and see,'' Rhule said, via ESPN. "Sam's a tough kid. He usually comes back really quickly. I'd say nothing's off the table.''

  Darnold is expected to be the backup quarterback for the Panthers this season. Baker Mayfield, meanwhile, will be the starter.

  With Matt Corral already out for the season with a Lisfranc injury, the Panthers can't really afford to lose another quarterback for an extended period of time.

  How long will Panthers QB Sam Darnold be out for after ankle injury?

  Having lost rookie third-round draft pick Matt Corral for the season, the Panthers are now sweating on number two QB Sam Darnold.

  Carolina quarterback Sam Darnold was carted off the field after sustaining a left ankle injury in the third quarter of the Panthers’ preseason finale against the visiting Buffalo Bills on Friday. The injury to Darnold provides a headache for the Panthers, who last week lost another quarterback, rookie third-round draft pick Matt Corral, to a foot injury that will keep him out all year.

  Panthers coach Matt Rhule said postgame that he heard from his medical staff that it “sounds like it’s not a fracture” but that Darnold would undergo further testing.

  Darnold was in the process of throwing an incomplete pass when Bills defensive tackle C.J. Brewer pulled the quarterback down, causing Darnold’s left ankle to twist unnaturally under Brewer’s weight.

  The injury ends a preseason in which Darnold lost a battle for the Panthers’ starting job to Baker Mayfield.

  On Friday, Mayfield played Carolina’s first four offensive series, throwing two touchdown passes. He completed 9 of 15 passes for 89 yards.

  Darnold entered in the second quarter and connected on 5 of 11 passes for 49 yards. He also ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

  The Panthers led 21-0 at the time of Darnold’s exit, and that proved to be the final score.

  Darnold, 25, broke into the NFL with the New York Jets, who made him the third overall pick in the 2018 draft out of Southern California. He went 13-25 in three years as the Jets’ primary starter, then was traded to Carolina in April 2021.

  Last season, Darnold finished 4-7 as a starter for the Panthers, connecting on 59.9 percent of his passes for 2,527 yards with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 12 overall games.

  In 50 career NFL games (49 starts), Darnold has a 59.8 percent completion rate for 10,624 yards, 54 touchdowns and 52 interceptions.
