“My brand muse wholesale lingerie , Lanie, has a bit of an English attitude,” Curtis said. “The charming details of my
collection I thought would be perfect for a store in the U.K. and at the time I thought Selfridge’s
had the most contemporary fashion forward lingerie department. Of course, as an emerging designer,
when no one knows your name, it is pretty impossible to get an appointment with a buyer or to even
get them to open your email. I was confident that Selfridge’s would appreciate my brand if they
would just experience it, and I would stop at nothing to get a meeting with them.
“I took the collection to London and showed up at their offices. I said I had an appointment with
the buyer at the time, knowing that she was actually on maternity leave because of a bounce back
email I received, and of course they said there was no appointment scheduled and that she was on
leave. I somehow convinced them that this buyer who was probably happily at home with her new baby
had somehow mixed up the appointment before she left and perhaps I was scheduled to see someone else.
I made the receptionist reach out to everyone in the department and turned it around to appear as
their fault for making me go through all this trouble. I convinced the Assistant Buyer to take a
quick peek at the collection right out of my suitcase in one of their conference rooms and then I
went to have lunch near by.xvttx123
“I got a call about 20 minutes after I left from the Assistant requesting that I return immediately
because the main buyer was impressed by the photos and feedback she saw and had to see the line at
once. She placed an immediate order on the spot and Selfridge’s continues to be one of my top
“After my years launching and designing swimwear for Solid and Striped, I decided I wanted to make
swimwear for Morgan Lane,” Curtis said. “The collection just launched this week! I am really
thrilled to move into this category. I have taken ideas from my lingerie and sleepwear and
implemented into the swim to create fashion bathing suits that echo the mystical nature of the Morgan
Lane brand. Next, I am diving into knitwear. I studied knitwear at Central Saint Martins and realized
there is definitely a lack of cashmere and cotton knits in the sleepwear and beachwear categories. I
will be launching my first cashmere loungewear collection for AW17. I hope to make Morgan Lane a
complete lifestyle, that my customers can live by, collect, and enjoy.”
